Summary
Space Cafe Tokyo's October talk features Dr. Ján Šubjak of the Czech Academy of Sciences, currently a visiting researcher at the University of Tokyo, on brown dwarfs: objects roughly the size of Jupiter but dozens of times more massive, too small to sustain hydrogen fusion. The talk covers the history of brown dwarf research from theoretical prediction to recent discoveries, how astronomers detect and weigh them, how they form and evolve, and why so few appear in the "brown dwarf desert" near other stars. Dr. Šubjak studied at Charles University and ESO and was a postdoc at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. The event is at Good Heavens British Bar in Shimokitazawa. Doors open at 19:30 and the talk starts at 20:00. Entry is ¥1,500 in cash at the door, including a first drink.
