A hands-on workshop run in collaboration with Mitutoyo, the precision measuring instrument maker, on how to use measuring tools properly. Participants handle calipers, depth gauges and height gauges directly to learn the measurement skills that underpin manufacturing and mechanical design. The session covers caliper basics and five ways to use one, how to read a dial, and a demonstration of accurate scribing, all inside just under two hours. The second half moves to digital use of measurement data, with a demo of the Bluetooth U-WAVE feeding readings straight into Excel. Participants then compare the dimensions of parts produced on a 3D printer, a CNC machine and a laser cutter, measuring how much error each machine actually introduces. It is aimed squarely at the problem of digitally fabricated parts not matching the drawing. The workshop suits people who have been using measuring tools by feel, anyone wanting to revisit the fundamentals of measurement, and those moving toward precise design and machining for volume production. It takes place at TIB FAB on the 2nd floor of Tokyo Innovation Base. Attendance is free, capacity is 10 people, and the minimum age is 15. Arrival is at 18:20 and the only thing to bring is something to write with. TIB membership registration through the app is required in advance for building entry.
About the community

One of a continuing series of maker workshops run by the fab space on the second floor of an innovation hub in Marunouchi, Tokyo. The programming targets people working with digital fabrication equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC machines, and runs as small hands-on sessions capped at around ten participants. Attendance is free and open to anyone aged 15 or over.
