Summary
Nerd Nite Tokyo returns for its 81st edition at Study Abroad Pub in Shin-Okubo, with two TED-style talks that pair the concrete with the abstract. Paul Alexander Helminck opens with a primer on prime numbers and why these mathematical atoms underpin almost everything people do online, from swiping a card to unlocking a phone.
The second talk comes from Hippo Yam, a rocket scientist who moved from space into art. He introduces U-ART, the creative group he co-founded, and its work on experiences that get people thinking about the beauty of the universe.
Doors open at 19:00 and the talks start at 20:00, so there is time for drinks and conversation first. Admission is 1,500 yen general or 1,000 yen for students, payable in advance online or at the door. There is no livestream this month, but the talks will be posted as video afterwards.
About the community
Nerd Nite Tokyo is a monthly evening of two or three TED-style talks delivered in a bar, covering science, technology, art, history and whatever else the speakers are deep into that month. Talks and Q&A run in English, and Japanese attendees are equally welcome. The crowd is a mix of researchers, engineers and generally curious adults who come as much for the drinks and conversation as for the slides.
