Summary
Nerd Nite Tokyo #80 returns to its regular pace of two TED-style talks delivered over drinks at the Study Abroad Pub near Shinjuku, continuing the group's 10th anniversary year with one new and one returning speaker. The format pairs accessible science and culture talks with a relaxed bar setting, and the July edition keeps to the usual rhythm of doors at 7 PM and the show starting later in the evening. The first talk, by Christopher Rathbone, looks behind the smoke and mirrors of the global tobacco industry and how corporate maneuvering has produced lasting social harm, along with what can be done about it. The second, by returning speaker Don Warren, turns skyward to ask what shines brightest in the vastness of space. Talks and Q&A are run in English, with Japanese attendees warmly welcomed. There is no livestream this month, but recordings of the talks will be posted after the event.
