Summary
OSS Gate runs this online workshop to give participants a hands-on first step into OSS development. Attendees join as either Beginners or Supporters. Beginners pick a target OSS together with a Supporter, follow the project's official docs to get it running, and file the issues or pull requests they discover along the way.
The day runs from 13:00 to 19:00 with an icebreaker, an explanation of the OSS contribution flow, hands-on time running the chosen OSS, the feedback step (filing issues / PRs), and a wrap-up retrospective. Communication happens over Matrix via Element, using screen sharing, text chat, and voice chat. Beginners and Supporters are expected to come with a GitHub account and a development machine already set up (version control, language toolchain, editor).
Beginner seats come in three tiers with different waitlist priorities: those who bring at least one Supporter, those who commit to returning as a Supporter next time, and the general slot. Supporter capacity is unlimited, and first-time Supporters are explicitly welcome — the format is designed so that someone with a GitHub account and basic OSS experience can help.
About the community
OSS Gate is a community initiative focused on lowering the barrier to OSS contribution for newcomers and infrequent contributors, with the explicit goal of growing the pool of people who keep contributing over time. It runs recurring hands-on workshops built around a Beginner / Supporter pairing format, organized through Matrix and Element.
